CoNAC athletes Nick Earl (on a home visit from Australia) and Alex Dunbar, mixed it with the country’s top 10,000m athletes on Saturday evening at the Parliament Hill Field track, for Highgate Harriers ‘Night of the 10,000m PB’s‘. The event incorporated the trial for the World T&F Championships being staged in London during August, so it was a tough call for both athletes.
Nick and Alex’s personal best times for the distance are almost identical being 29.34.11 and 29.34.20 respectively. As expected both were fully committed to the cause of producing new personal best times but sadly over the mentally testing 25 lap race the prevailing windy conditions proved to be the winner. Nick clocked a pleasing 29.46.03 while Alex just missed out on breaking the 30min barrier when posting a time of 30.00.16.
3,000m Steeplechaser Iona Lake was drafted in to pace the Ladies 10,000m trial race to the half way mark and was leading the way at the pre-arranged schedule and looking comfortable until a shoelace, despite being double knotted, loosened, forcing an early withdrawal from her duties. Oops!
Dani Nimmock had to stomach the bitter disappointment of having to withdraw from the Ladies trial race having recently picked up a troublesome calf injury.
The status of this unique event continues to grow with well over 3,000 vociferous fans of athletics making their presence felt. It also proves to be innovative in its approach to staging endurance events as the organisers include a beer tent sited on the back straight which the athletes pass through on each of their 25 lap journey!
